Paranormal Investigation at King’s Lynn Carnegie Library

Join Spooky Paranormal Investigations for an evening paranormal investigation inside the historic former King’s Lynn Carnegie Library on London Road.

Now known as the Old Library and home to The Workshop, the building offers a particularly unusual investigation environment, including the former main library room, first floor and basement.

No previous paranormal investigation experience is required. SPI provides equipment for guests to use, and you are also welcome to bring your own.

SPI does not promise or guarantee paranormal activity. We do not use actors, staged scares or knowingly manufacture paranormal activity or evidence. We encourage guests to consider ordinary explanations and form their own conclusions.

About the Venue

The building opened as King’s Lynn Library on 18 May 1905, funded by a £5,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie and designed in a Gothic style with Arts and Crafts influences.

After serving the community as a library for 121 years, the building began a new chapter following the relocation of the library service.

It is now home to The Workshop, a creative arts hub operated by The Garage Trust, which has become the new custodian of the historic Old Library and continues to keep the building in public and community use.

Areas We Investigate

Investigation areas are expected to include:

  • the former main library room
  • the first floor
  • the basement

The first floor can only be reached by a very narrow spiral staircase.

The basement is accessed through a trap door and ladder.

Exact access may change if an area cannot safely be used or venue requirements change on the night.

Accessibility & Physical Access

This event has significant physical-access limitations, and guests should read this information carefully before booking.

The main entrance is approached using steep steps.

There is no lift inside the building.

The first floor can only be accessed using a very narrow spiral staircase.

The basement can only be accessed using a ladder through a trap door.

The first floor and basement are therefore not accessible to wheelchair users.

Guests with reduced mobility, balance difficulties or difficulty using stairs or ladders should carefully consider whether the event is suitable for them.

There is no accessible toilet at the venue.

If you have mobility, accessibility or participation requirements, please contact SPI before booking so we can explain the venue conditions and discuss whether any reasonable adjustments may be possible.

You do not normally need to provide a medical diagnosis — it is more useful to tell us about the barrier you may experience or the adjustment you require.

Important Basement Access

Access to the basement requires guests to climb down and back up a ladder through a trap door.

Nobody is required to enter the basement if they do not feel physically able or comfortable doing so.

SPI will provide instructions before basement access.

Guests must:

  • follow instructions from SPI
  • use the ladder carefully
  • only enter if they feel physically able and confident to do so
  • avoid carrying loose equipment while climbing where this could make access unsafe

SPI may restrict or stop basement access if conditions are considered unsafe.

What Happens During the Evening?

Guests will meet the SPI team, check in and receive an introduction and important safety and venue briefing.

You’ll then take part in investigation sessions through different areas of the building.

SPI hosts will introduce investigation equipment and methods and support guests who have never investigated before.

There will be breaks during the evening, and the exact format may vary depending on access, timing and safety requirements.

Meeting Point, Parking & Base Area

Guests should meet the SPI team at the main gates leading into the Old Library on London Road.

The car park immediately beside the building is owned and managed by King’s Lynn Council rather than the venue. The venue advises guests to use nearby public parking rather than relying on the adjoining car park.

Nearby options advised by the venue include:

  • County Court Road — approximately 2 minutes’ walk
  • St James Multistorey — approximately 3 minutes’ walk
  • Church Street NCP — approximately 8 minutes’ walk
  • Boal Quay — approximately 8 minutes’ walk

Guests should check current parking restrictions, charges and opening arrangements before travelling.

SPI’s base and break area will be within part of the former main library room.

Guests may leave belongings in the base area, although personal belongings remain the responsibility of the guest.

Please arrive at the advertised time.

If you are running late, contact SPI as soon as possible. Where venue arrangements allow, we will normally try to accommodate arrivals up to approximately 15 minutes after the advertised start time, but late admission cannot be guaranteed once the investigation has begun.

Equipment, What to Bring & Refreshments

SPI provides a range of paranormal investigation equipment for guests to use and will explain how it works.

You may also bring your own paranormal investigation equipment and remain responsible for it during the event.

Please bring:

  • a torch
  • sensible, secure footwear
  • warm clothing
  • any personal medication or essential items you require
  • your own investigation equipment if you wish
  • food and non-alcoholic drinks if wanted

The building is old and some areas can become cold, so please dress appropriately.

SPI will provide tea and coffee.
